TAHİR ÖZAKKAŞ, M.D., Ph.D.
He was born in Kayseri in 1958. He completed his primary and secondary education in Kayseri. He started his medical education in Hacettepe University in 1978. He graduated from Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine in 1986. During his years in the Faculty of Medicine, he completed Istanbul University Faculty of Political Sciences Department of Politics and Administration in 1983.
He completed his obligatory service during 1986-88 in Kayseri incesu district. In the same years he conducted his post graduate studies in Gazi University Faculty of Political Sciences on Psychology of Politics. During the years 1989-93 he completed his doctorate studies in Erciyes University Institute of Health Sciences on Public Health. During 1994-97 he specialized in Psychiatry in Azerbaijan University of Medicine.
Then he got the master degree equivalence in Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. At the same time he maintained a lecturer position in Azerbaycan Medical School, also he got an associate professor degree. After passing from the associate professor equivalent science candidate exams he completed his thesis titled “Psycho, Pharmaco and Combined Therapy Response Specialties in Anxiety Disorders”.
His areas of interest are psychotherapy and hypnotherapy applications in personality disorders and anxiety disorders. Since 2005 he organizes Integrative Psychotherapy Training Program on theoretical, formulation and supervision levels for mental health professionals in the Psychotherapy Institute founded by him and representing the Masterson Institute in Turkey. As the President of the Psychotherapy Institute, he has undersigned corporate agreements with many international organizations, and is acting as the representative and training planner of several international psychotherapy schools in Turkey.
BACKGROUND AND MISSION
Psychotherapy Institute was founded in 2005 by Dr. Tahir Özakkaş to provide training and consultancy in the field of mental health.
It has been registered under the title of “Psikoterapi Enstitüsü” as a commercial company in 2007 because of the absence of legal regulations allowing establishment of private institutes specialized in specific areas of training. The objective of the Psychotherapy Institute is understand, reveal, and study the basic dynamics of the cultural, traditional and local structure of the people of our country along with the universal common grounds of human regarded as a bio- psycho-social entity. Within this scope, our goals include understanding the psychological structure of our people, unraveling its dynamics, and exploring suggestions for solution.
Our organizational mission involves mediating the transfer of universal knowledge, skills, and accumulations to our country, to gain the classic works of the psychotherapy literature to our language, to host the masters of the psychotherapy schools whose efficacy has been proven for trainings in our country, to engage in institutional cooperation activities with international psychotherapy organizations, to organize short- and long-term training programs, and to train psychotherapists equipped with knowledge and skills suitable for the needs of our people. We also provide therapeutic services within the legal framework provided for the mental health professionals.
We have been carrying out lobbying activities for legal amendments that would allow accreditation of the trainings offered by our organization at graduate and post-graduate levels.
Psychotherapy Institute serves as an umbrella organization, accommodating hundreds of psychotherapists. Completing their training in the Psychotherapy Institute, psychotherapists carry on treatment practices in their public or private institutions, or in the premises of the Psychotherapy Institute. Psychiatrists, medical doctors, psychologists, psychological consultants, social workers, and psychiatry nursers serve in this structure interconnected in the form of a supervision tree.
Our therapists who received their psychotherapy training from the Psychotherapy Institute are mainly specialized in the disorders of the self, trauma-related problems, and all symptomatic traffic of neurotic structures.
The Institute focuses its therapeutical studies not only to the patient, patients problems and surface problems structured with the patient but also to the main problems underpinning these problems and for this reason it adopts not only a single therapy method but different methods and techniques together with a integrative approach. Psychotherapy studies continue basically within the scope of “integrative psychotherapy” as attack, individual, group, couple, nuclearfamily and traditionalfamily (stirps) therapy.
INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY TRAININGS
This program is a 3 years program with its theoretical, formulational and supervisional framework; and the first priority on attendance is given to the mental health professionals, and second priority is given to the other health professionals that needs counseling on patient relationships. SUPERVISION AND TRAINEE PRESENTATIONS
Starting training in June every year, each training group spend their third year of training in supervision. Before graduating, trainees are supposed to present and discuss minimum two cases accompanied with video, voice record, or written transcript. Training is completed after discussion of four assignments and graduation thesis prepared by each student.

MASTERSON APPROACH TRAININGS
Four-month training of 170 hours in total, teaching the abandonment depression theory ofJ.F. Masterson in personality disorders. In this advanced training for those who have completed Integrative Psychotherapy Training, the courses cover historical background of the theory, disorders of the self (borderline, narcissistic and schizoid disorders of the self), case formulations, and treatment strategies.
PUBLIC CONFERENCES AND CORPORATE TRAININGS
Psychotherapy Institute arranges meetings open to public attendance, rather than mental and medical health professionals, to increase their knowledge. These meetings are held with mental health related topics such as psychotherapy, identity and identity develeopment, personality types, disorders of the self and adolesence. These meetings have dual purpose; first is to overcome their doubts about taking psychological support and to make them familiar with field professionals; and second is to teach the right, healthy, and functional coping strategies they can use in their everyday lives. Since 1986, by the cooperation of the public and private institutions, these events are being held in the form of conferences and conversation meetings. Within this framework, social responsibility trainings are organized for companies, municipalities, and organizations affiliated to the district governor.
PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR DISORDERS OF THE SELF MASTERSON APPROACH
DR. JAMES. F. MASTERSON
Dr. Masterson pioneered the developmental self and object relations approach to the psychotherapy of the Personality Disorders through clinical research. He is the founding father of The Society of Adolescent Psychiatry and past president of its New York Chapter.
The body of Dr. Masterson’s work is represented in the books he has written, many of which have been translated into several languages, including early work in the field of the real self, which represents a breakthrough in treatment of the borderline and narcissistic disorders.
J. F. Masterson, who we have lost in 2010, supported the Psychotherapy Institute with close interest, providing the necessary training and supervision support to our organization’s therapists. He has pioneered the formation of a core group of therapists in our Institute.
In these series of congresses, “Abandonment Depression Theory” developed by the great theoretician J.F. Masterson in personality disorders is discussed. These international congresses host theoretical and case presentations of the clinicians and researchers working with the Masterson’s Approach. International Masterson’s Days, organized annually, have become a school where many therapists develop their knowledge and skills.
OTTO. F. KERNBERG
Otto F. Kern berg, MD, FAPA, is Director of the Personality Disorders Institute at The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Westchester Division and Professor of Psychiatry atthe Weill Cornell Medical College.He is the founder of the Transference-Focused Psychotherapy.
Dr. Kernberg is Past-President of the International Psychoanalytic Association. He is also Training and Supervising Analyst of the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. In the past. Dr. Kernberg served as Director of the C.F. Menninger Memorial Hospital, Supervising and Training Analyst of the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis, and Director of the Psychotherapy Research Project of the Menninger Foundation.
“Kernberg’s Days” conferences are organized to introduce Transference-Focused Psychotherapy in Turkey, and to bring up transference-focused psychotherapy practicing therapists in Turkey.
We organize Kernberg’s Days in cooperation with the The Personality Disorders Institute at the New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weill School of Medicine of Cornell University. Otto F. Kernberg, the Director of the Personality Disorders Institute, and his team encourage and support of studies. They have provided a private set of TFP trainings to our core group of therapists to serve the purpose of teaching Transference-Focused Psychotherapy in Turkey. Aiming at training therapists who want to practice Transference-Focused Psychotherapy in Turkey, this study has enhanced our inter-institutional cooperation and also opens the door for further collaboration.
OBJECT RELATIONS APPROACH PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
Vamik Volkan, MD, DLFAPA, FACPsa, is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia, an Emeritus Training and Supervising Analyst at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute, and the Senior Erik Erikson Scholar at the Institute of Education and Research of the Austen Riggs Center, Massachusetts. He also served as a member of the International Negotiation Network directed by the former USA President Jimmy Carter. He was awarded the Sigmund Freud Award for Psychotherapy of the City of Vienna.
Prof. Volkan authored or edited 49 books, and published more than four hundred scientific articles. He was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for four times for carrying out projects in various troubled spots in the world, and for developing psychopolitical theories.
VAMIK VOLKAN’s DAYS
Vamik Volkan, a worldwide renowned pscyhoanalyst, born in Cyprus, educated in Turkey, and living in the U.S. for long years, is among the distinguished clinicians and researchers supporting the Psychotherapy Institute. We know the importance of language very well in learning the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapies and Object Relations. The trainings and discussions with lecturers speaking foreign languages imply the significance of language use, choice of words, sentence structures, and tone and emphasis of voice. Right at this point, the workshops with our valuable teacher Vamik Volkan present a marvelous picture, as we observe in the feedbacks of our trainees and workshop participants. We experience being taught by someone, who is one of us, who feels and thinks like us, in a clear, understandable and facilitating way. While we listen to him, we interpret what we hear, and the knowledge almost streams into our hearts and minds even before we realize it. TIME-LIMITED DYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY APPROACH
Since 1991, Dr. Levenson has taught brief therapy at California Pacific Medical Center, where she has received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award three times. In 2004, Dr. Levenson joined the core faculty at the Wright Institute in Berkeley. She also maintains a private practice in Oakland and San Francisco, where she sees couples and individuals. ACTIVITIES WITH HANNA LEVENSON
Over the recent years, time-limited psychotherapy practices focusing on a specific goal and group of clients are widely accepted and practiced, besides long-term psychotherapy practices. Several psychotherapy practices have been developed under the title of Brief Dynamic Psychotherapies.Time-Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy (TLDP) is one of these brief dynamic psychotherapies. Developed by Prof. Dr. Hanna Levenson, TLDP is an integrative psychotherapy approach blending affect regulation, relational therapy, countertransference analysis, and object relations within the principle of here-and- now. The keystones of this approach are the patient selection criteria, limited time of 20-25 sessions, the principle of here-and-now, gaining a new understanding and experience in the session, and a belief that life itself is the best therapist.Within the framework of our institutional cooperation with Levenson Institute for Training, two organizations are involved inmutual training support The Levenson Institute for Training has been training a core group of therapists under the roof of the Psychotherapy Institute for the aim of introducing and expanding the practice of TLDP in Turkey, and to educate TLDP-oriented psychotherapists. These training programs are enriched and enhanced with new participations every year.
EMOTION – FOCUSED PSYCHOTHERAPY APPROACH

Les Greenberg, Ph.D. is a full Professor of Psychology at York University in Toronto, Ontario. He is the Director of the York University Psychotherapy Research Center and one of the world’s leading authorities on working with emotions in psychotherapy. Dr. Greenberg is among the primary developers of emotion focused therapy (EFT) for individuals andfor couples. Dr. Greenberg received the 2004 Distinguished Research Career Award of the International Society for Psychotherapy Research, of which he was a past President. He recently was awarded the Canadian Psychological Association Professional Award for distinguished contribution to psychology as a profession.
ACTIVITIES WITH LESLIE GREENBERG
From a historical perspective, the theoretical progress of psychotherapy that started with Freud to continue with the drive-conflict theory, ego psychology, object relations and cognitive theories has arrived at a point today where we understand that emotions constitute the basis for everything. Without understanding the emotional schemes, which are much deeper- rooted than cognitive schemes, it cannot be possible to achieve in-depth change, but we can only reach change on the surface. The Emotion-Focused Therapy approach of distinguished theoretician and practitioner Leslie Greenberg, who has been laboring in this theoretical framework for thirty years, offers a wide range of applicability, including couple and family therapies.ln the recent neurobiological researches and studies, it has been understood that the origins of internalized object relations and psychopathologies are rooted in affect dysregulation. It has been understood that therapeutic approaches that fail to reach the emotional source and to ensure affect regulation cannot provide long-term benefits.
Prof. Dr. Greenberg is a great pioneer cited by many works in the field. We are honored to learn the Emotion-Focused Therapy that he has developed from him at first hand. Through our friendly relationships with Leslie Greenberg, it is our aim to provide trainer’s training to a core group of therapists in Emotion-Focused Therapy. NEUROBIOLOGICAL APPROACH TO PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
DR. ALLAN N. SCHORE
Dr. Allan Schore is on the clinical faculty of the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, and at the UCLA Center for Culture, Brain, and Development. He is author of three seminal volumes, Affect Regulation and the Origin of the Self, Affect Dysregulation and Disorders of the Self and Affect Regulation and the Repair of the Self, as well as numerous articles and chapters.
His Regulation Theory, grounded in developmental neuroscience and developmental psychoanalysis, focuses on the origin, psychopathogenesis, and psychotherapeutic treatment of the early forming subjective implicit self. His contributions appear in multiple disciplines, including developmental neuroscience, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, developmental psychology, attachment theory, trauma studies, behavioral biology, clinical psychology, and clinical social work.
DEVELOPMENTAL NEUROBIOLOGY & ATTACHMENT THEORY
The studies, which have been attempted to be defined as isolated and independent, but actually refer to the same realm in essence, are fortunately addressed from a multidisciplinary perspective in recent years, seeking common answers to common questions. Right at this point, Dr. Schore’s studies constitute the basis for producing verifiable and measurable values that make it possible to gather all discussions together and evaluate them from a scientific angle. UNIFIED PSYCHOTHERAPY APPROACH
Jeffrey J. Magnavita, Ph.D., ABPP is a psychologist in active clinical practice and a leader in the movement toward unified clinical science. In 2006, he received the American Psychological Association’s Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Independent or Institutional Practice in the Private Sector for his work in unification and personality systematics. Additionally, Dr. Magnavita was the Connecticut Psychological Association’s Recipient of Distinguished Contribution to the Practice of Psychology Award in 2000 as well as the Connecticut Psychological Association Recipient of Distinguished Contribution to the Science of Psychology in 1995. He has been influential in advancing the field of unified clinical science through his numerous publications in personality, psychopathology, and psychotherapy.
ABOUT UNIFIED PSYCHOTHERAPY
The Unified Psychotherapy Project (UPP) Task Force is an invited group of leading researchers, scholars, theorists, and clinicians who are devoted to advancing the field of clinical science and psychotherapeutics. The mission of the task force is to catalogue the methods and techniques of contemporary psychotherapy and organize them at four domain levels. The UPP is similar, although on a smaller scale, to the human genome project in that there currently is no comprehensive database which can be used by clinical scientists and clinicians..Aiming to provide a large umbrella for the psychotherapies, J. Magnavita and his team indicate that the way to understand the human goes through understanding the concept of an interrelated system comprising from the microsystems to mesosystems. John C. Norcross, Ph.D., ABPP, is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Distinguished University Fellow at the University of Scranton, a board-certified clinical psychologist in part-time practice, and an internationally recognized authority on behavior change and psychotherapy.
Author of more than 300 scholarly publications, Dr. Norcross has co-written or edited 20 books, including. Psychotherapy Relationships that Work, Handbook of Psychotherapy Integration, the Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Resources in Mental Health, Changing for Good (with Prochaska and DiClemente), and Leaving It at the Office: Psychotherapist Self-Care He coauthored 10 editions of the Insider’s Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical & Counseling Psychology and Systems of Psychotherapy: A Transtheoretical Analysis, now in its 7th edition.
He has served as president of the American Psychological Association (APA) Division of Clinical Psychology, the APA Division of Psychotherapy, and the International Society of Clinical Psychology.

PAUL L. WACHTEL
Paul L Wachtel, PhD, is a distinguished professor in the doctoral program in clinical psychology at City College of New York and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is internationally recognized as an innovator in the field of psychotherapy and for his contributions to the application of psychological theory and research to the pressing social problems of our times.
Dr. Wachtel has served on the editorial boards of numerous journals spanning a variety of perspectives and concerns. He is the author of many books on psychotherapy, personality dynamics, and psychologically oriented social criticism. A number of his books have been widely described as classics in the field. A cofounder and Steering Committee member of the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration (SEPI), Dr. Wachtel is recipient of the 2010 Hans Strupp award.
DR. ASSEN ALLADIN
He has been working as a clinical psychologist for 25 years. He is the head of the Department of Clinical Hypnosis in Alberta, Canada. He has written books and articles on clinical hypnosis. He worked as a psychologist in Calgary Police Department. In addition to working for public hospitals and in private practice, he has been a Professor, a scholar, and an editorial consultant to several professional journals. He teaches and supervises Psychology undergraduates and graduates and Psychiatry Residents. He also provides training in Clinical Hypnosis and Cognitive Hypnotherapy nationally and internationally. His areas of interest are abnormal psychology, child psychopathology, current (controversial) issues in psychopathology, cognitive behavior therapy, clinical hypnosis, dissociative disorders.
WILLIAM M. PINSOF
William Pinsof is President of The Family Institute, clinical professor in the Department of Psychology in the Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences at Northwestern University, and the director of the Center for Applied Psychological and Family Studies at Northwestern. He currently teaches in the Northwestern University Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy Program and also teaches both undergraduate and post-doctoral courses for Northwestern University students. His academic and research work has focused on evaluating the outcome of marital and family therapy, understanding the process of marital and family therapy and the integration of different therapeutic approaches for maximal cost effectiveness.
Dr. Pinsof received the Distinguished Lifetime Contribution to Family Therapy Research Award from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy in 1996, the Distinguished Contribution to Family Therapy Theory and Practice Award from the American Family Therapy Academy in 2001, and the 2001 Family Psychologist of the Year from the American Psychological Association Division 43 – Family Psychology.
Dr. Arthur Freeman is a licensed clinical psychologist. He is a world-renowned expert in the field of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Author of the top-selling popular books, as well as over 75 professional books, text books and DVDs, Dr. Freeman is in demand as an educator, speaker, consultant, and therapist. He has lectured in 40 countries at workshops, institutes, hospitals, universities, and at international meetings.His work has been translated from English into 15 other languages. In his 30+ years of practice, much of Dr. Freeman’s success as both an educator and therapist has been attributed to his vast knowledge and understanding of the therapeutic relationship and the nature of therapeutic change. His warm, yet no- nonsense demeanor and his results-driven approach, have allowed him to work with a broad range of individuals and with a broad range of psychological and life problems. His treatment model is based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
THE JOURNAL OF PSYCHOTHERAPY INTEGRATION
A group of scientists formed the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration (SEPI) under the American Psychological Association (APA) 30 years ago. This Journal published by SEPI represents an attempt to reach the common effective factors underlying many schools of psychotherapy in an evidence-based manner.
SEPI is an international society with members from various countries. SEPI hosted 29 conferences until 2013, providing for a dialogue among its members and a ground for sharing view and ideas in a non-dogmatic way. As the Psychotherapy Institute, we wanted to inform the psychotherapy community in order to encourage evidence-based exploration and scientific study of common effective aspects of different schools of psychotherapy to replace the therapy wars. We translated and published the Journal of SEPI in Turkish to form a scientific bridge to integration efforts in Turkey.
CLINICAL HYPNOSIS DAYS
The Psychotherapy Institute organized the first, second and third National Hypnosis Congresses in 2004, 2005 and 2006 in cooperation with Yeditepe University and Medical Hypnosis Association. The aim of the National Hypnosis Congresses is to create a scientific platform which will gather the health professionals and scientific people interested in hypnosis in Turkey and follow on national level the knowledge, experience exchange and worldwide developments.
We are planning to organize National Clinical Hypnosis Congress regularly every year, with the participation of clinicians and researchers from around the world.
INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTERAPY SYMPOSIUM
The Integrative Psychotherapy Symposium planned for every years the Pyschotherapy Institute is aimed at emphasizing basically the multiple theory formulation in psychotherapy and the place and importance of cultural codes within this formulation with a integrative approach and in this context creating a platform to share the similar knowledge, experiences and practices in the world. For this reason the symposium that with bring academicians and field practioners together from Turkey and abroad will be held.

Session records, printed therapy stories prepared by transcribed from session records and psychotherapy, hypnosis, hypnotherapy and catatimy training films and transcribed that the mental health professionals who are trained and make practice within the institute can obtain for their professional development are published. The said printed and visual session records are published for education purposes under patients’ consent by changing their identity information.
Psychotherapy Institute is built on a closed area of2.000 sqm with six storeys, having warm physical features in its location adjacent to the Marmara Sea.
The foundation objective of the Institute is to host all psychotherapy approaches and trainings in the world. It is aimed to benefit from the knowledge and skills of scientists and practitioners specialized on various subjects in order to educate the psychotherapists needed in our country.
All kinds of physical infrastructure have been provided for the purpose of organization of national and international conferences, and providing regular and long-term psychotherapy practices.
Psychotherapy Institute has a 250-people capacity training and cocktail hall, two lecture halls with 70- and 20-people capacity, several multi-purpose rooms and halls for practice and training.
It is attempted to provide all comforts to the participants and trainees in the training and lecture halls with air-conditioning and fascinating seascape.
There are lounges for the participants to take rest in the breaks and after class, and a terrace floor with a beautiful, wide seascape to watch the sunset in the evening and to enjoy lovely moments of hot drinks and warm conversations.
Our Institute is also enriched with our kitchen, equipped to meet all needs of participants at time of cocktails and dinners as well as breakfasts prepared for the mornings of training days.
Accommodation is also provided to the participants, who regard the Institute as a family home as they step from their boutique rooms to a peaceful, safe and friendly world.
Our trainees may prefer to go to the sea on the beach next to our building, or swim in the indoor pool, drinking coffee by the pool.
All needed audiovisual and written training materials may be provided from the bookstore of the Institute with special discounts to our trainees.
Participants also have an opportunity to obtain the entire audiovisual archive of their training from the sales store at 75% discount.
Our therapy rooms and corporate support center is available for requests for any kind of individual and corporate consulting services. Upon request of our trainees, their individual analysis and therapies are also conducted by our efficient trainers and therapists.
Our ongoing trainees have the opportunity of borrow books from our vast library as well as reading and printing among 100.000 full articles in the Psychoanalytic Electronic libraries installed in our computers.
